Paige POV

I opened one last cabinet and found a single strawberry-and-oats granola bar.
Knowing that wouldn’t hold me over long, I sighed heavily as I opened the wrapper to take a bite. It seemed I couldn’t avoid going into public any longer. We were in dire need of a trip to the grocery store.
This would be my first time leaving home since I returned from the hospital. Hank had been a well-known and respected man. Since I was responsible for his death, I feared I was the talk of the town. The thought alone had terrified me enough to turn me into a hermit. Combining that with my mixed feelings on the subject was a terrible combination. Plus, I was trying to hide until the stitches on the side of my face and all my scrapes and bruises on my hands and knees were completely gone.
The sound of the door swinging open and closing had me spinning around. Colton took off his cowboy boots on the rug and then crossed the living room to enter the kitchen.
At the sight of me, he spread a handsome smile across his face. I couldn’t help but sneak a peek at his sexy cowboy jeans paired with a thick leather belt that had a large Western buckle. The beating of my heart soared wickedly as my eyes leisurely continued an upward trail, finding a white-and-blue plaid shirt tucked into his pants. His sleeves were cuffed at the elbows, revealing his stunning tattoo sleeve on his arm. Splotches of mud were on his arms.
Feeling a lump in my throat, I swallowed thickly. Oh, jeez. I was seconds away from tackling him to the floor. My libido had returned, and it was ready to make up for lost time.
“Earth to Paige.” Colton waved a hand right in front of my face.
I wasn’t sure why I was blushing because I’d been caught ogling my own cowboy, but I was. “Good morning.”
“Morning to you, too.” He grinned and drew me close to his body.
His other hand went to my nape to bring my mouth to his. He sealed his lips over mine for a kiss. My natural instincts kicked in, and I closed my eyes and melted into him, getting lost in the sweet taste of him.
When we parted, I stared up at him and asked, “Are you finished feeding the animals already?”
“Yes. I came in to find out what you were making for breakfast.”
I noted the playful hint in his voice. Colton knew as well as I did that there was nothing of substance in our kitchen. He just wasn’t aware of the reasons behind my hesitancy to go in public, and I preferred to keep my reservations to myself, not wanting him to worry. He had enough on his mind.
I elevated my hand with the granola bar. “I’ve only taken one bite so far.” I wiggled the nutritious treat within my grasp. “Would you like to split it with me?”
Colton let go of me and snatched the food from my fingers.
“Hey! That was my breakfast!” I shouted.
“Not anymore.” He took a bite and chewed slowly.
I narrowed my eyes at him, and his sparkled with mirth right back at me.
“You implied that you’d share this with me,” he said.
Oh, my cowboy was being playful today, and I had a good hunch as to why. He would do anything to distract me and lighten my spirits. He never wanted me to be sad. He always wanted me to be laughing and smiling.
“Exactly! I said that I would split my granola bar with you, not give it to you.” I laughed, falling into his trap.
He could always make me smile. I shoved my palm out at him and repeatedly flicked my fingers toward my body. “Now, give it back.” My tone was low as I was hoping to intimidate him.
“I’m afraid I can’t do that.” Colton grinned deviously. He dipped his head down to my level, gave me a brief smacking kiss and murmured along my lips, “What’s yours is mine, baby.”
I drew my face away from his. Otherwise, I would never be able to think clearly. Then, I set my hand on my hip and gave him a good stare-down. “Make sure you remember that in the future when I take the last brownie or slice of pie from the dish even if you called first dibs.”
“Oh, no!” Colton scoffed. “That’s an entirely different circumstance.”
One of my brows lifted in curiosity. “How do you figure?” I asked, thinking this was going to be good.
“It’s simple.” He shrugged nonchalantly, but the boyish glint of humor in his eyes didn’t go undetected by me. “Desserts don’t count. They are in a whole different category by themselves. So, if the last piece of brownie is supposed to be mine”—he pointed to his broad chest with both of his hands—“then it’s mine.”
My mouth fell open. “So, I can’t touch one of your delicious baked goods that I slave away in the kitchen to make from scratch?” I stepped forward and pointed my index finger into his sternum as I kept my game face in check, hoping to rein in my amusement. “But when my stomach is contorting painfully in pure hunger, I should share the very last granola bar with you?”
“That’s an over-the-top assessment”—his lip twitched as he nodded—“but, yes, that is correct.”
I rolled my eyes and shoved his chest. The man clearly made no sense.
“Get out of my way.” I laughed and snatched my granola bar. “I need my coffee before I can deal with you.”
“Love you, too.” Colton chuckled wholeheartedly.
